How to Create Easy Elf Movie Decorations
One of our favorite holiday movies is Elf. So, I love any chance to bring the magic and whimsy of that movie into our home. Be that Elf inspired Snowball Playdough or special Holiday Movie Night—By the way—GRAB my FREE FREE Holiday Movie Bucket list!!!
This year I decided to have some extra fun with our decorations and try and replicate the famous, over-the-top decorations from the movie.
It’s pretty simple when you think about it—it’s just paper snowflakes, paper chains, and some gold tinsel.
Why Buddy the Elf Holiday decorations are actually perfect
Upon first glance, Buddy the Elf’s decorations seems totally over the top, but if you look closer, they’re really very neutral and minimal in style.
They’re also great decorations for interfaith families celebrating both Christmas and Hanukkah because they’re so neutral and are similar to the Hanukkah palette (minus the blue).
So, as you can see, you can make these decorations as crazy or as simple as you like and it still conveys that simplistic whimsy.

Some Tips before you get started
As we all know from the movie, Buddy the Elf is very passionate about Christmas decorations and spends all night decorating–covering every inch of the ceiling.
REMEMBER- Know Your Limits!
I’m pretty short and I know it’s hard for me to reach the ceiling, so I I decided to hang mine from an archway between my dining and living room.
HAVE FUN AND BE CREATIVE-like Buddy!
My original intention was to just make snowflakes and paper chains but as I working, I came up with the idea to also make a paper chain snowman using scraps from the snowflakes. (Watch my video below for all the details and Time Saving Tips!)
WATCH MY VIDEOS below for all the detail on how to create intricate snowflakes, paper chains, and paper chain snowmen.
All of these decorations can be made with just a few supplies.
- plain white sheets of printer paper
- scissors
- paper cutter(optional)
- mini craft clothes pins
- stapler
- masking tape or Command Hooks (for the attaching to the wall or ceiling)
- gold tinsel
Directions
Watch my videos above are a full Step by Step How To. Whether it’s been years since you last made a paper snowflake or just need some new ideas, I’ve got you covered!
Create paper snowflakes and paper chains, then hang where you can enjoy them most. I used little mini craft clothespins to attach the snowflakes to the tinsel.
I also used my new Shine Bright Ornament in the middle.
For directions on how to create your own, check out my Super Sparkly Ornament Post. I love how well it came out. Happy Planner lovers, do you recognize the Shine Bright sticker?
