I spent a few days this past week at the Franciscan University at Steubenville, engaged in inspiring, thought-provoking, and at times heated and challenging discussions related to the anniversary of the Second Vatican Council decision to remove the collective charge of deicide from the Jewish people paving the way for an official outreach and bridge building effort between the Catholic Church and the Jews, and later other religions as well. I presented at the The Philos Project conference "Nostra Aetate and The Future of Catholic-Jewish Relations at a Time of Rising Anti-Semitism". My presentation was titled "The Dialog on Freedom": The Catholic Church's discourse on freedom - and what that means for the rise and fall of antisemitism." and discussed the challenges facing the Catholic Church in confronting authoritarianism, why the rise in authoritarianism is almost inextricably linked to antisemitism, how the Jewish "Chosenness" and covenant, by focusing on free will and freedom of thought, rather than challenging Catholicism, allowed it to arise, and why the Church's response to authoritarianism is essential in terms of the significance of Nostra Aetate and a collective interfaith response to authoritarianism, as well as central to the Catholic-Jewish relations. I discussed how this document and its history could be useful in figuring out a moral response to contemporary threats and dilemmas such as the #Israel-#Hamas war.#religion #freedom #authoritarianism #Poland #Hamas #Gaza #Israel #middleeast #arabworld #humanrights #humanrightsviolations #antisemitism #theology

Helping Church Leaders Grow Effective, Faithful, and Sustainable Churches through Discipleship

📚🤔 In a recent discussion with an aspiring pastor facing a significant career crossroads—accepting a full scholarship for Seminary versus exploring alternative yet fulfilling ministry paths—highlighted a critical aspect of preparing for ministry leadership. As someone with extensive experience in theological education, I deeply value its contributions. However, our conversation pivoted to a fundamental inquiry: Why Seminary? 🎓This isn't to question the importance of theological education but to emphasize that leading and growing a church demands more than just theological knowledge. It requires a profound understanding of and engagement with the surrounding culture. Reflecting on St. Patrick's Feast Day, St. Patrick's approach to ministry was emblematic of this philosophy. He didn't limit his efforts to preaching; he deeply immersed himself in the culture of the people he sought to reach, understanding their beliefs, music, and arts to communicate effectively. 🍀💡The core of our discussion wasn't to devalue theological studies but to advocate for a broader set of tools in ministry. Balancing deep theological insights with an acute awareness of the cultural landscapes we navigate might just be the key to making a more substantial impact on our communities and church growth. 🚀I invite your insights: How do you balance theological education with cultural engagement in your ministry practices?
