9 of the best Elf on the Shelf Ideas | Emma's Diary Blog (1)

The first of December brings a flurry of activity. In homes up and down the country parents are split into 2 categories - Elf lovers and Elf haters.

The mischievous elf on the shelf can bring out a sense of dread in many of us. I know I live in constant fear of forgetting to move the elf each evening and have to have multiple alarms set so I remember. But the elf on the shelf is also a lot of fun if you don’t let yourself get bogged down with it all.

If you can fully embrace the Christmas spirit then you can let your imagination run wild. We all have those nights though where your mind goes completely blank, and so for those days I’ve gathered 9 of the best elf on the shelf ideas.

Keep this bookmarked so you can come back for some inspiration when you’re feeling stuck!

Elf on the Shelf ideas

1. Elf Having A Wee

If your kids are into toilet humour then this one is bound to leave them giggling. Position the elf so it looks like he or she is having a wee into a small cup. A shot glass is ideal, but anything clear glass works fine. Pour a little apple juice into the cup and make a quick sign about lemonade.

As far as mess free elf on the shelf ideas go this one is always a favourite.

2. Toilet Roll Elf

Sticking with the toilet humour, stick the elf through the centre of the toilet roll tube and roll him around. This works really well if you can drop him down some stairs!

For extra fun add some other toys and make it look like he’s been pushed.

3. Elf Builds An Igloo

For evenings where you have a bit of time on your hands, why not build a marshmallow igloo? It takes a bit of planning, but the reaction from the kids is well worth it. Make the igloo out of card first so there is a structure in place, then stick white mini marshmallows to it.

It is also fun to add a hot chocolate station with marshmallows next to it for everyone to get stuck in to when they wake up.

4. Elf Plays The Floor Is Lava

Get the elf holding on somewhere up high and pretend the floor is lava. You can either make fake lava and flames from paper or just make a quick sign - either way the kids will soon realise what he is doing and probably jump up to play too.

5. Elf Decorates Eggs

Arm yourself (and the elf!) with some pens and get creative. You can go for the wholesome option shown below, draw silly faces, or write silly words for older kids. Whatever you do the kids will love blaming the elf for getting up to mischief again.

6. Hide And Seek Elf

This is one of the quickest mess free elf on the shelf ideas. A simple side and hide elf somewhere around the house. It’s set up in no time at all and will keep the kids entertained for a few minutes in the morning. Easy but effective.

7. Elf Snowball Fight

If you can handle making a bit of mess (and accepting that the kids will make it 10x worse when they get up) then an elf snowball fight is a lot of fun. You can use scrunched up bits of paper as the snowballs, or mini marshmallows work really well too. Have your elf throwing them at some of the other toys for some extra fun.

8. Elf Melts A Snowman

Grab a dish and place some water, buttons and twigs and pretend that your elf made a snowman but it has melted. Kids will wind it hilarious that he did something so silly as to take it inside. This works really well if you’ve had snow outside, but if you haven’t then the elf can leave a note saying they tried to take a snowman from the North Pole for them.

9. Elf Made A Toilet Roll Snowman

Following on from his melted snowman disaster, have your elf try again. But this time, he’s armed with toilet roll. Draw eyes, a nose and a mouth on some toilet rolls, add some buttons and then stack them. It’s very quick to make and you can use the toilet roll as usual after - just don’t touch the elf!
